Local Teen to Visit School in Haiti She Helped Build

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – It would be an understatement to say Taylor DeVos is accomplished for her age.

At just 14, the teen has had a helping hand in building two schools in Haiti, spoken at WeDayin Saskatoon, SK, placed runner up in TedxTeen’s ‘The Next Big Thing’ video competition. Not just that, but she’s also started her own platform, One Kid Making a Difference, to inspire other teens to help create change in the world.

Now, she is heading to Balan, Haiti, for a week to see firsthand the impact she has had on the community.

“We’re going to visit one of the schools that I built, and we’re going to visit my sponsor child, and my sister’s sponsor child,” she explained to Energetic City in an interview.

It was a camping trip when she was only nine that started everything. When Taylor couldn’t find another channel to watch, she took in a World Vision program and says she felt she had to acknowledge her privilege as a child living in Canada as she saw the lives of children in other countries.

On her tenth birthday, her parents fulfilled her one wish: to sponsor a child through World Vision. That avenue eventually led her to connect with Mesline in Haiti, quickly becoming very close pen pals. Taylor’s sister also has a sponsor child, Manocheca.

After the 2010 Haiti earthquake devastated the country, she was driven to help in some capacity. Quickly, the idea came to her to help build two schools in Haiti, with a fundraising goal of $15,000 to accomplish it. Taylor found support and was able to reach the ambitious goal, donating it in June 2014 so that two schools could be built.

“I want to meet everybody and see how their ways of living are compared to ours in Canada, and make relationships, and see the impact I’ve made on the kids in Haiti,” she said.

Now in high school, Taylor has a new goal to reach – she wants to provide access to education for as many Malawian girls as possible before she graduates high school. Promoting educational resources for these women and children is one of the causes she is most passionate about.

To help promote more education for women and children in Malawi, One Kid Making a Difference is partnering with World Vision for the cause.

Donations to this campaign will help in many ways, such as providing textbooks, as well as making schools a comfortable place for the girls to be, and even sponsor two ‘best learners’ to go on and visit a local college.
